Clay is the earth itself: ground stone, river silt and time, softened by water and waiting to be shaped. It’s cool at first, then warms to your touch. It remembers every press of your thumb, and it won’t be hurried.
Over four slow Monday evenings at BELLHAUS, ceramicist Melody Malinga will guide you back to the oldest way of making things. Put the day down, sit close to the ground, and let your hands lead while your mind goes still. No experience is needed, only a willingness to get your hands in the earth.
What you make will be imperfect, and it will be yours. Earth that passed through your hands and through fire, and came back as something you can hold.
The four weeks
- Week 1, 9 November: Pinch. Meet the clay and shape your first vessels from a single ball of earth.
- Week 2, 16 November: Coil. Build slowly upward, rope over rope, as vessels have been made across this continent for thousands of years.
- Week 3, 23 November: Slab. Roll the earth flat and fold it into form. Your pieces then go in for their first firing.
- Week 4, 30 November: Colour. Paint your fired work with underglazes.
After a final glaze and a last pass through the kiln, your pieces are ready to collect from 7 December.
